While water related hazards such as floods and droughts are on the increase, the degradation of wetlands and other ecosystems erodes naturefs ability to regulate these hazards. In this workshop, we make the case for the need to integrate ecosystems in resilience practice and the importance of landscape level planning to reduce disaster risk.
Landscape level planning in Delta areas
This workshop presents two examples of landscape level planning and interventions in the Mahanadi Delta in India and the Inner Niger Delta in Mali. They highlight how upstream infrastructure developments can lead to increased disaster risk downstream and how local community actions are effective in developing resilience. We also show how up]scaling can lead to policy change at delta or river]basin scale and to increased government investments in ecosystem restoration.
