Lead (Pb) on Surfaces by a Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analyzer

This surface sampling method was developed to provide a reliable, portable procedure that will provide prompt measurement of surface contamination levels of lead. Information gained from samples taken during an initial walk-through portion of an inspection may influence decisions regarding the next steps to take, making the inspection more productive. Immediate clearance of clean areas such as lunchrooms or on the hands of employees entering such areas is possible if contamination levels are acceptably low. Surfaces that are suspected of being highly contaminated, and are observed being disturbed (blasts of air, mechanical agitation, etc.), may be a source of air contamination. The lead contamination on such surfaces can be determined and remediation can begin without waiting for lab results.
