Boston Scientific is a major medical device manufacturer that specializes in minimally invasive devices, such as catheters and such. They have over 25,000 employees in 14 plants around the world and spend over $1B dollars annually on R&D.
The Sterilization Technical Services group based in Maple Grove, MN supports new product development for sites that are using ethylene oxide to sterilize products and packages. They use Matrix LIMS to track and report on R&D sterilization requests from scientists at any of their facilities.
A high workload and the validation challenges in a regulated environment drove the company's decision to purchase a commercial LIM system over an Access database system. Matrix was chosen because of its flexibility and its configurability out-of-the-box; with no incremental modules to license.
The original implementation of Matrix used custom written .asp web pages for customer request submission. These pages were difficult to change and were limited to sample registration only, with no sample progress information readily available to the customer.
