The Medical Research Council (MRC) has units based in Uganda and Gambia. These were the chosen countries to introduce a state of the art incinerators to help tackle the Measles and HIV outbreak that plagues millions of people.
The MRC’s focal point is medical science that will provide life changing improvement to the health systems in both the UK and in Africa. They have been in operation for over 90 years and are funded through the government science and research budget.
An incinerator is needed
Addfield was contacted about the disposal of waste from HIV research programmes in Uganda and Gambia by the Medical Research Council. They already had two other incinerators that turned the waste into a tar ball. One of these was the De Montfort MW incinerator which was common in Africa during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The second machine was an upgrade which improved the combustion process of the waste, but the users were limited to using the machine at night, with the door open, to stop the smoke affecting those at a nearby school.
Fitting into the Plan
Africa has long suffered devastating disease and crushing poverty which is why it is vital programmes are produced to alleviate serious medical problems. The principal programme to date is the Millennium Development Goals of which one of the goals is to combat HIV/Aids, Malaria and other diseases since 26 million Sub-Saharan citizens have HIV.
It is understood that an effective research strategy should encompass people, infrastructure, equipment and institutions. For this reason, it was necessary that the best incineration on the market was supplied. Addfield will continue to support the MRC with upcoming projects to improve the healthcare systems of Africa.

Hot hearth MP machines are second to none. They are specifically designed for the incineration of red and yellow biohazardous waste such as discarded medicine, sharps, human anatomical, soiled, and microbiology waste. The front loading design is not only for ease of use but also ensures there is a lack of restriction to where the incinerator can be located. There is a choice of five sizes in this series ranging from 0.392m3 to 1.176m3 (up to 500kg loading capacity).
Advantages of using Addfield incinerators
We were invited to offer our systems to the Medical Research Council; three of our machines were delivered and commissioned some 6 months ago with great feedback. The waste is burnt during the day, resulting in a clean white ash, with no smoke present.
Smoke is simply unburnt fuel when commissioning machines it is vital to allow for the calorific values of the waste stream (fuel) to ensure the three elements are adhered to offer a clean incineration process. With not enough combustion air being present inside the incinerator the fuel will search for air (via the stack) resulting in smoke, with controlling these factors through our incinerators ensure the waste is managed effectively and the site is clean.
