Mexico Power Report Q2 2015

We maintain our bright outlook for Mexico's power sector, premised on the liberalisation of the

Mexican power and hydrocarbon markets and the country's positive macroeconomic trajectory. We forecast total power generation to rise by 3.4% in 2015 and we expect it to expand by an annual average of 3.5% until 2024, driven by growing private investment in the generation and transmission segments as a result of the power sector's reform implementation. We also forecast an annual average power consumption growth of 3.8% along our 10-year forecast period. We expect natural gas-fired generation to increase its already dominant position in the Mexican power mix, fuelled by cheap feedstock imports from the US and increasing domestic supply. Finally, we forecast renewables to experience significant growth over the next decade, although the power mix will remain heavily dependent on thermal generation.

Key Trends And Developments

In November 2014, the publication of the regulations enacting the Law of the Power Industry (whose

secondary laws were approved in August 2014) marked a crucial step forward in the implementation of

the power sector reform. The reform will open the generation and transmission segments of the Mexican power market to private investments - in an effort to reduce electricity prices and enable the country to meet its growing power demand.
