Mineral water: a microbiological approach


Total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and high heterotrophic plate count were found in bottled mineral water. What may represent an important public health problem, because the presence of these microorganisms can be harmful to the health of the consumer, principally because some are opportunistic pathogens capable of causing infections in vulnerable individuals. Sales of mineral water have been increasing in the world and consequently your quality research also.

The microbiological quality of 263 samples of bottled mineral water of 37 Brazilian brands was analyzed during three years at public health laboratory in School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Univ Estadual Paulista-UNESP, Araraquara SP, Brazil.

This work shows data about the quality of mineral water and the importance of this type research principally because there is still much debate about the use of heterotrophic plate count in this type water.
