The anchoring and orientation of liquid crystal (LC) molecules are influenced by several parameters. This paper presents theoretical work that aims to explain how surface changes and potential due to corrosion, affect the LC orientation and anchoring. This work is done with a view of enabling the design and development of a LC based corrosion sensor.

On the Ground with Diesel Corrosion - Case Study
When the EPA revealed the results of its study in July on the increasing presence of substantial corrosion in diesel fuel tanks, it proved that the problem is much larger than anyone anticipated. The facts are staggering: 83%of the diesel tank systems exhibited moderate-to-severe corrosion. 75%of the owner/operators of those diesel tanks had no idea it was happening. The corrosion is developing in both steel and fiberglass tank systems. Even more staggering is the severity of the corrosion I have been...
Scaling vs. Corrosion: Why It Matters for Your Boiler Feedwater System
When using boilers for an industrial plant and process, one of the most important things to implement is the appropriate treatment of the boiler feedwater before it has a chance to scale and corrode equipment. Before beginning any process with a boiler, understanding the makeup and return water chemistry/characteristics, the manufacturer’s requirements for the boiler (what pressure it should be run at, what water purity requirements are, etc.), and how this affects your feedwater treatment options will save...
EPA Study: 83% of diesel tanks have moderate to severe levels of corrosion
The EPA has released the results of the largest survey to-date on corrosion levels in underground storage tanks (USTs) containing diesel fuel -- and the results are staggering. The research showed that 83 percent of the USTs studied exhibit moderate to severe corrosion. Worse, only 25 percent of the owners of those tanks with corrosion were aware of it prior to the study. That, according to Carolyn Hoskinson, Director of theEPA’s Office of Underground Storage Tanks (OUST)is troubling – because that...
Corrosion protection in the pulp and paper industry
It is widely accepted that corrosion has an important economic impact at an industrial scale. As an example, results of a study carried out in the US showed that the total annual estimated direct cost of corrosion in the country was $276 billion, which was approximately 3.1% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Thus, within the last few decades, an important effort has been made to solve this issue and corrosion management has improved significantly in terms of better solutions, including enhancement...
Corrosion and fouling control in process equipment
Effective chemical treatment programmes can help to prevent plant damage and financial losses arising from corrosion and fouling. Corrosion attack is an omnipresent threat in oil refineries and petrochemical plants. It may lead to loss of production, cost of maintenance and repairs, replacement costfor equipment, safety aspects and potential environmental impact. If corrosion is slow and well identified, costs can be controlled and planned years in advance. General corrosive species which are observed in the...
