Chapman (2007) observes that transport accounts for 26% of global CO2 emissions and it is one of the few industrial sectors where emissions are still growing and are expected to add to environmental degradation. Although generic motivating factors identified in the literature have contributed somewhat to knowledge, there is a need to develop a clearer understanding of the motivations driving corporate environmental practices especially CO2 emission mitigation practices. The motivating factors identified from the literature include: energy and implementation cost; operational efficiency; global climate protection; social responsibility; customer, competitor, regulatory and stakeholder pressure; corporate strategic direction; reputation enhancement; and the opportunity for new sources of capital. This paper considers Weinhofer and Hoffmann's (2010) conceptual model that explains motivations for climate change mitigation action; and a further conceptual model which explains the influences, motivations and catalysts on a firm's level of commitment towards corporate social and environmental responsibility.

Predicting N2O emissions from nitrifying and denitrifying biofilms: a modeling study
Wastewater treatment plants can be significant sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. While our understanding of N2O emissions from suspended-growth processes has advanced significantly, less is known about emissions from biofilm processes. Biofilms may behave differently due to their substrate gradients and microbial stratification. In this study, we used mathematical modeling to explore the mechanisms of N2O emissions from nitrifying and denitrifying biofilms. Our ammonia-oxidizing bacteria...
Modeling Tip: Using Hourly Emission File Editor in BREEZE AERMOD
BREEZE AERMOD includes numerous time-saving tools to help with setting up a modeling run. One of these tools is the Hourly Emission File Editor. This modeling tip explains how to use that tool to easily use refined hourly emission rate data in your AERMOD runs. AERMOD offers many options for capturing the variability of emission rates and other source parameters. Emission rates can be varied by season, day of the week, time of day, wind speed, and more. The highest level of detail that AERMOD allows is the...
Second-generation biofuels can reduce emissions
Second-generation biofuel crops like the perennial grasses Miscanthus and switchgrass can efficiently meet emission reduction goals without significantly displacing cropland used for food production, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Illinois and collaborators published their findings in the inaugural edition of the journal Nature Energy. The researchers call it the most comprehensive study on the subject to date. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency`s Renewable Fuel Standard...
Modelling emissions of perfluorinated chemicals to the Danube River Basin
The emissions of two perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) into the Danube River Basin have been estimated in a test of four different hypotheses regarding the factors affecting those emissions. The results were used to simulate water concentrations for comparison with measured data. The researchers found that incorporating wastewater treatment information and wealth distribution alongside population data can improve the accuracy of emissions estimates. The emissions of two perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) into the Danube...
A review of sulfide emissions in sewer networks: overall approach and systemic modelling
The problems related to hydrogen sulfide in terms of deterioration of sewer networks, toxicity and odor nuisance have become very clear to the network stakeholders and the public. The hydraulic and (bio)chemical phenomena and parameters controlling sulfide formation, emission and their incidences in sewer networks are very complex. Recent research studies have been developed in gravity and pressure sewers and some transfer models have been published. Nevertheless, the models do not take into account all the...
