Monitoring weather and climate from space

State of the art weather forecasting, which has become an essential part of everyday life in Europe, would be almost  unthinkable without the reliable operational service delivered by Europe’s meteorological satellite organisation – EUMETSAT. The high-quality data and images are especially relevant in the context of severe weather situations and eather-related natural disasters. They are used by forecasters to identify and monitor potentially dangerous situations and subsequently issue warnings, which in turn can help to save lives and property. But even in more “normal” situations of every day life, the information gathered by EUMETSAT satellites is vital for the safety of air, shipping and road traffic as well as for a variety of industries including farming and construction. Through the introduction of new satellite services providing, for example, improved input for Numerical Weather Prediction models, the accuracy of forecasts is further enhanced, thus benefiting European industries and citizens.
