Municipal wastewater namely sewage is generated by residential, institutional, commercial and industrial establishments. It includes household waste liquid from toilets,baths,showers,kitchens, and sinks drained into sewers. In many areas, sewage also includes liquid waste from industry and commerce. The separation and draining of household waste into greywater and blackwater is becoming more common in the developed world, with treated greywater being permitted to be used for watering plants or recycled for flushing toilets.Municipal wastewater is closest to people’s work and life,so it must be treated very well to guarantee human life and natural environment.
Municipal wastewater treatment depends typically on national and local regulations and standards.Treating wastewater has the aim to produce the effluent that will do as little harm as possible when discharged to the surrounding environment, thereby preventing pollution as much as possible.Sewage treatment generally involves three stages, called primary, secondary and tertiary treatment.Firstly,primary treatment requires putting the wastewater in a quiescent basin to separate heavy solids from oil, grease and other lighter solids.Secondly,secondary treatment removes dissolved and suspended biological matter.Thirdly,Treated water is disinfected chemically or physically prior to discharge into a stream,river,bay,lagoon or wetland, or it can be used for the irrigation of a golf course, green way or park. If it is sufficiently clean, it can also be reused for groundwater recharge or agricultural purposes to realize the best discharge and reuse.
