The N8 Cashel to Mitchelstown Road Improvement Scheme – a new 37km section of motorway – was the first Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) type contract to be undertaken in Ireland.
Under ECI, WYG PH McCarthy (together with Hyder and Grontmij) were appointed as designers at an early stage in the development of the design to prepare the EIS, preliminary design and detailed design. Together with the contractor, Roadbridge Sisk JV, WYG PH McCarthy came up with innovative solutions such as sustainable drainage attenuation systems ,emergency crossover barrier systems and importantly the bridge and earthworks designs were tailored to the Contractors methods of working.
WYG PH McCarthy found that through ECI their design work could be tailored to meet real, rather than possible, construction plans, while the Contractor was able to understand and be party to delivering the environmental and other commitments given during the roll-out of the project. Significant time was also saved, resulting in the highway opening a full year earlier than originally planned.
