Nanocrystalline magnesia alumina mixed oxide: efficient defluoridation sorbent

0

Nanocrystalline magnesia-alumina mixed oxide (Mg0.80Al0.20O1.10) prepared by combustion synthesis method was found to be an excellent sorbent for uptake of fluoride anion of up to 120 mg L−1 concentration. The sorption was achieved at a pH of 6 with 0.015 g of oxide and maximum uptake could be achieved within a period of 1 h. The sorption followed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with a maximum sorption capacity of 10 mg/g of fluoride. The uptake is a particle diffusion controlled process following pseudo second order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0519 g mg−1 min−1.
