A spreadsheet model, TASAR, was developed for analysing national separation strategies of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Finland. The model was used to answer the following question: What kind of a strategy is needed to attain the recovery rate target of 70 %wt set for MSW in Finland?
TASAR proved to be a useful planning tool. Firstly, source separation was studied resulting in the maximal national recovery rate of 54 %wt with the current separation activity of waste producers. Secondly, recovery rates between 65 %wt and 74 %wt were achieved when source separation strategies were complemented with central sorting of mixed waste.
