Renewable energy resources are all the rage nowadays on a global scale with the biggest benefit of providing unlimited access without any fear of depletion or running out in the near future. It also provides the edge of saving the continuously decreasing fossil fuel reserves and to protect the planet against the harmful pollution caused by the burning of all non-renewable resources. Some common examples of renewable sources are sun, wind, rain and water. However adaption towards such environmental friendly options does as well has its fair share of problems and disadvantages such as high costs, maintenance of infrastructure and  unreliability of supply. Such factors greatly discourage the consumers to shift out of fuel consumption and on to the green power generation alternatives.

The biggest concern about utilization of renewable sources for energy production is that they fail to generate the massive amount of electricity as that produced by their non-renewable counterparts like coal. Power generation of the prior quantity will only be possible by setting up a much larger number of energy facilities. This in turn would exponentially increase the set up and installation costs of solar panels or wind turbines. In addition, it may take a time-lag of even decades in order to cover the initial invested capital amount. Moreover, as renewable energy relies on weather therefore, the supply of such sources is not reliable enough to solely depend upon them to run industries and households.

Such that hydro generators require water to fill the reservoirs, solar panels need clear sunshine to generate electricity and wind mills must have continuous wind availability to turn the blades. Thus climatic environment of each country does not allow such a convenient switch to renewable sources. Large scale solar set ups on national levels require huge land areas which can be used for other purposes. Such centers of energy production usually lead to destruction of habitat as well as vegetation. Another pollution causing aspect of solar power is that the photovoltaic cells used for electricity production contain silicon as the integral component along with mercury, cadmium and other toxic substances which may harm the environment in the long run.

Despite the negatives mentioned above, the benefits of utilizing renewable energy far outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, a vital point to remember is that the best solution to our current energy issues is to operate on the perfect blend of all power sources i.e. partially renewable is much better than entirely non renewable and vice versa.
