Using the same technology to clean up catastrophic oil spills, Next Filtration has come up with a green solution, Next FOG STOP™, using Molecular Kinetics technology in a liquid formulation.
Next FOG STOP™ contains an optimized array of earth-friendly fermentation-based yeast proteins, micronutrients and highly specialized surfactant chemistry that’s dosed at only a few parts per million. The additive stimulates the indigenous bacteria population living in the sewer to accelerate natural biodegradation. The grease is rapidly metabolized by the bacteria in the sewer, not just solubilized. It’s then easily moved downstream to a pump station or sewage treatment plant being consumed along the way.
When used holistically in a collection system there will be as much as a 40 percent reduction in mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) production on a consistent basis at the Waste Water Treatment Works.

Why Native Bugs?
In the past, colonies of new bacteria were brought in to fight FOG, but it was not as effective because new bacteria colonies often die off. Instead, stimulating the existing bacteria to produce natural enzymes inside the system has proved to be more successful. In fact, the product has been shown to eat channels through fatbergs.
Causes of FOG and How it Affects Us
FOG happens when fat, oil and grease are poured down our drains combining with other junk dumped down our sinks and toilets. The FOG cools and accumulates on the interior of the sewer pipes. The congealed mess of FOG can harden like concrete, restricting flow or bursting pipes. These blockages can be extremely difficult and costly to repair. The New York Times estimated that clearing ‘grease backups’ cost the city $4.65 million in 2013-14.
Blockages result in sewer odor, overflowing manholes, backups, and flooding. The release of raw sewage pollutes everything it touches and exposes people to disease-causing organisms.
FOG is an issue in both residential sewer collection systems as well as in areas with food service establishments. Next FOG STOP™ has been particularly beneficial in those pumping stations and sewer systems that serve a high volume of fast-food restaurants that previously were fined by the local municipalities due to the extent of the issues they caused.
