NILU supports Vietnamese authorities on improving air-quality

Directors from the Vietnamese Department of Natural Resources and Environment - DONRE, and Ho Chi Minh Environmental Protection Byreau - HEPA, are this week (24th - 29th April 2006)visiting the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU). The aim is to strenghten existing co-operation between Vietnam and the Norwegian Institute.

The topics of interest are NILU´s environmental research with emphasis on airborn pollution, urban transport of air pollution, transformation and deposition, assessment of the effects of pollution on ecosystems, human health and materials as well as NILU´s systems for integrated environmental surveillance and planning systems.

Like many of the countries in Asia with a fast growing economy, Vietnam face new environmental challenges. With a dramatic increase in the number of combustion vehicles, a densening population in the cities and new industry, maintaining good air-quality in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is a growing task.

NILU are already engaged in air-pollution and air-quality projects in these -  the two largest cities in Vietnam. In Hanoi NILU is working with traffic related pollution and air quality. In Ho Chi Minh City, the focus is on air pollution and possible human health effects. In HCMC, NILU has established a surveillance system for monitoring the city´s air quality. It is today run by Ho Chi Minh Environmental Protection Byreau (HEPA) - on behalf of Department of Natural Resources and Environment i HCMC (DONRE - HCMC)
