In many consolidation tests the imposed rate of strain is several orders of magnitude faster than field rates even though it is well known that some of the parameters derived from laboratory tests are strain rate dependent. For this reason it is essential that the standard test procedure provides adequate guidance on the acceptable rate of strain for various classes of natural soils. This paper reviews the problem, describes the approach taken by several authors, and suggests further research that will lead to improvements in consolidation technology.
