The extraction of Oil and Gas from Subsea wells produces large quantities of waste water contaminated with hydrocarbons. These “Produced Waters” are disposed of directly into the oceans. Determination of the Hydrocarbon Index (HI) is required to meet environmental legislation.

Traditionally infra red methods have been used but these require solvents extraction using solvents that present their own environmental and Health and Safety concerns. In response the Oslo and Paris Convention (OSPAR) responsible for guiding environmental legislation concerning the North East Atlantic has introduced a new reference method (ref. 1) using GC- FID, based on a modified version of the ISO 9377-2 method.
