Photochemical Transformation of Bisphenol A Promoted by Nitrate Ions

Bisphenol A [2, 2-bis (4-dihydroxydiphenyl) propane] (BPA is widely used as a raw material for polycarbonate and epoxy resins. The residue level of BPA in surface water was shown to be at a rather high level, ranging from 4.4x10-10 to 5.3x10-8 mol L-1 by the U.S. Geologial Survey (Kolpin et al. 2002) and 5.7x10-9 to 5.7x10-5 mol L -1 in landfill leachates in Japan (Yamamoto et al. 2001).
