Site Summary

Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality (Environmental Response Division) has spearheaded efforts to clean up concentrations of petroleum compounds associated with two former underground storage tanks. A field pilot study was performed to determine the effectiveness of ORC in treating the on site petroleum hydrocarbon contamination.
Approximately 3,720 lbs. of ORC were used at this site, which consisted of four treatment zones. Zone 1 and Zone 2 were excavated and treated. In Zone 1, 3,200 cubic feet of soil was removed and 750 lbs of ORC was backfilled into the bottom of the excavation. In Zone 2, 9,600 cubic feet of soil was removed and 1,350 lbs of ORC were applied to the bottom of the excavation. Zone 3 and Zone 4 were source plume treatment areas. Zone 3 received 1,410 lbs of ORC, approximately 71 lbs per injection point. Zone 3 consisted of 2 monitoring wells and 20 ORC injection points. Zone 4, an ORC injection area consisted of 15 injection points receiving 210 lbs. of ORC, 14 lbs/point.
