Moncks Corner, South Carolina, was almost wiped off the map back when hurricane Hugo roared through (9/22/89).
It was located just a few miles on the northeast side of the storm, 'which is the absolute worst place to be during a hurricane. The eye of the storm passed right through the town. When it hit South Carolina it had SUSTAINED winds of 140 MPH.' Hugo is the biggest, strongest hurricane to ever hit the East coast north of Florida.
