Predicting the future in waste

At the NSW waste conference in Sydney last year, Richard Neville, acclaimed futurist, noted: “The future can no longer be taken for granted. It now needs to be rescued!” He also noted that “Organisations fail when predictions they made about the future turned out to be false”.

So if we do stop to think about it, what might we predict is likely to happen over the next year or few in the waste industry? Australians should be better at their ability to look over the horizon, given our inventiveness with the Jindalee radar system and the like.

At this time of the year, as we wind down to one of the most wasteful periods of the year, I thought it appropriate to have a look at some of the major issues we’re facing. I’ll even go out on a limb with some predictions for the coming year.
