The urban region of Male’ comprises of Male’, Villingili, Hulhumale’, Hulhule’, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu. Due to space restrictions for further water and wastewater infrastructure development in Male’, it has become necessary to evaluate options of individual island specific systems against centralized systems interconnected by submarine transmission systems.
The Republic of Maldives comprises of about 1200 islands widely dispersed over 90,000 square kilometers of the Indian Ocean. The Maldives population in 2006 census was estimated to be scattered across 198 inhabited islands. About 30% of the nation’s population is in Male’ the capital island. The population growth rate was relatively high and the economy has grown at an average rate of 6.7% during the last decade. This rapid urbanization coupled with high economic growth rate continues to place a significant demand on infrastructure and financial resources in the country.
