Project - Clark Magnet High School
Clark Magnet High School emphasizes science and technology for high school students in the Glendale Unified School District near Los Angeles. Marine Science Research classes taught by Ms. Dominique Evans-Bye, utilize a VideoRay ROV to teach students about environmental awareness and applied robotics. Ms. Evans-Bye first acquired the VideoRay in 2006, and upgraded to a Pro 4 named “Johnny Lex” in 2011, thanks to a generous donation from the local Lexus dealership.
With their VideoRay ROV, Clark High students have conducted several environmental research projects, including a spatial analysis of heavy metals in the L.A. Harbor sediments and a survey of marine debris in Redondo Canyon with the Los Angeles Waterkeeper. Students also participate in competitions and exhibits throughout the year, including the Google Science Fair, Siemens “We Can Change the World” Challenge, and Thatcher Environmental Challenge.
Clark High students do not just benefit from the hands on experience with the ROV. Ms. Evans-Bye has involved her students in every phase of acquiring the ROV. Clark High students have won more than $186,000 to date from various grants and scholarships, including the $70,000 grand prize from the Lexus Eco Challenge in 2012 for their project documenting arsenic levels in lobster around the world. One student helped Ms. Evan-Bye write a grant proposal that earned their school $100,000 from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board to expand their ROV program. Another student presented alongside Ms. Evans-Bye to an audience of 12,000 at the 2011 Esri International Users Conference.
Clark High shares its ROV with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Dive Team, a partnership that allows both organizations to share funding and resources to benefit their community. Partnering with the Dive Team also provides unique learning opportunities for student ROV operators.
