Protect Your Pumpkin Patch From Pest Birds
As the leaves begin to change colors and temperatures drop, more and more pumpkin patches are opening for business. Don’t let pest birds ruin the season you’ve waited all year long for. Keep your pumpkin patch safe from pest birds with these tips from Avian Control.
Scare Away Pest Birds
Stop birds from pecking at your pumpkins by scaring them away. There are numerous methods that can be used to frighten birds from your pumpkins, including but not limited to:
- Wind socks and other visual displays: the movement of windsocks and other visual bird deterrents frighten birds and cause them to fly away.
- Broadcasting the sound of predator birds: predatory bird calls will cause pest birds to believe they are in danger and steer clear of your pumpkin patch.
- Decoy birds: fake predatory bird displays are inexpensive and easy to set up to help startle birds away from your land.
While these methods are all fairly effective, birds could catch on to your scare tactics and return to your pumpkin patch. Different methods may be needed to permanently deter birds away from your pumpkin progress.
Distract Birds with Feeders
Hunger is what drives birds toward your pumpkin patch. Providing alternative food sources will help distract pest birds from your pumpkins. By setting up bird feeders on the outskirts of your property, birds will feed at the feeder, not on your pumpkins. While this method may deter some birds, it will be harder to convince a hungry bird to eat the bird seed with fresh pumpkins and their seeds near by.
Create a Barrier with Netting
Netting will not stop birds from entering you pumpkin patch, but it will stop them from being able to access your pumpkins. This method is great if you have a small pumpkin patch. However, if your pumpkin patch is large and your customers get to pick out their own pumpkins, this method is highly labor intensive because netting would need to be removed each day upon opening.
