Pyramat HPTRM succeeds where others fail at restoring shore

This site is on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. The lake is very large, the biggest in the state, and gets significant ice buildup every year that wreaks havoc on the shoreline.

This site has 8 foot wave action that has been documented by the Department of Natural Resources. In years past concrete sea walls had been installed, but the walls cracked and were destroyed after a couple years. Because of the strong wave action and heavy ice buildup in winter, this was an ideal test site for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the use of Pyramat® high performance turf reinforcement mat (HPTRM). Other manufacturers had installed their products as well but those products did not perform well and washed out in the lake after just two weeks. Pyramat is the only successful product that is still installed today.

Lake Winnebago is approximately two miles across, and historically ice formed and slammed into the shoreline, scraping away the reinforcement. But with woven Pyramat HPTRM, the ice actually slides up and doesn’t get hung up on the material or scour the land.

After the Pyramat was installed, workers placed plant plugs to speed the revegetation process. They had no problem installing the plugs because the drill could auger right through the Pyramat. With other TRMs the material had wrapped up and fouled the drill.
