Quantifying struvite formation in Calgary’s wastewater treatment system

0
The paper presents a sampling and sample preparation protocol to evaluate struvite formation in the solids processing train of a wastewater treatment plant. The protocol was applied to the City of Calgary’s Bonnybrook and Fish Creek WWTP’s and the Shepard Sludge Lagoons. The soluble and particulate portions of magnesium, nitrogen and phosphorus (the chief components of struvite), as well as calcium and aluminum, were measured throughout Calgary’s solids processing system. The annual amount of struvite formation in the system was estimated.
