Recycling Zinc From Municipal Solid Waste
Results from experiments carried out in laboratory and on a 0.5 MW test facility are presented. It was shown that Zn can be substantially extracted from waste using different techniques. In the pilot experiments the Zn behavior was investigated with radioactive tracers. It was shown that by changing the operation conditions from combustion to gasification the amount of evaporated Zn can be increased. Considering chemical and process engineering parameters the incineration process was simulated on a laboratory scale reactor. The reactor was used to test the influence on the volatility of Zn during thermal treatment of synthetic waste. Zn volatility was increased by HCl or under reducing conditions. HCl was used to obtain Zn-free municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash.
