Reducing Greenhouse Gases from Sewage Solids Incinerators

There is increased interest in incineration of sewage solids because of restrictions on land application of sewage solids and increasing concerns about transportation costs and emissions. New installations and upgraded incineration facilities have become more fuel efficient and have incorporated much better air emissions control equipment to reduce air emissions. With the increased interest in controlling greenhouse gas emissions, what is the impact of sewage solids
incinerators on greenhouse gases and can incinerators be considered “green’ alternatives for solids processing? This paper reviews recent incinerator installations and presents the conclusion that incinerators can be effective solids processing alternatives to land application with low air emissions and greenhouse gas emissions.
