Traditionally, the chemical engineer can rely on chemical separation methods such as distillation, crystallization, extraction, and adsorption. This paper presents a process technology for continuous separations based on ion exchange, adsorption/desorption, and chromatography. Key advantages and demonstrated process examples are included.

Calgon Carbon introduced its ISEP® (ion exchange and adsorption) and CSEP® (chromatography) technology in 1990. The systems are now installed in more than 300 operating units worldwide. The systems have demonstrated significant advantages over traditional approaches.
