Reduction of economic risks associated with the disposal of hazardous wastes in Hungary

Environmental risks are a growing public concern in Hungary. The threat of contaminated drinking water from abandoned and illegal hazardous waste disposal sites is receiving increased attention from citizens and from the environmental authorities. In respect to the problems of hazardous waste disposal, one of the most important objectives of Hungarian environmental policy is the enhancement of public health and safety. A target of this policy is the reduction of risks associated with the disposal of hazardous wastes. This study presents a brief description of the current situation of hazardous waste management in Hungary. The study also addresses a risk assessment technique and model for estimating landfill risks at the first Hungarian hazardous waste disposal site as Aszod.
