Reliable Water Quality Data and Ingenuity Mitigate Algal Bloom Threat at Korean Dam
South Korean firm K-water worked with a regional distributor to install a contained and protected sampling system used to continuously monitor for hazardous algal blooms at one of the country’s largest dams.
As the organization responsible for operating South Korea’s integrated water management system, K-water oversees an entire water supply chain, from source water to tap water. This includes a large dam in Gyeongsangbuk-do built in 2016, to improve water quality, secure adequate river flow, reduce damage from flooding and provide a stable water source.
When the dam was forced to cease operation due to a dangerous algal bloom, it was imperative that K-water immediately begin monitoring water quality at the site, in order to understand the characteristics of the bloom and do everything possible to control it.
