Reorganizing Rental Stock for Better Flow
Hydreka is proud to be able to claim the largest stock of rental products for water cycle measurement of any company in France. This lets us guarantee our customers that if they need rental equipment, we will have it in stock and ready to ship to them anywhere in the world. But, maintaining such a large inventory also poses its challenges. We have recently changed the layout of our warehouse to improve the flow of rental products through the cycle of rental, return, and intermediate steps to prepare them for their next use.
Using 5S principles for reduction of waste, we set out to reduce the amount of shelving space required for our rental operations. We then analysed how products move through our warehouse, and aimed to streamline their movements. The image below is a spaghetti diagram showing the path of rented products being stocked and then picked for shipping through our stockroom prior to any change.
We found that the optimal solution was to turn the shelves at a 45° angle to the walls, creating direct walkways from quality control to shipping. As we moved the shelves into this new arrangement, we took the opportunity to also consider which products are stored on which shelves. The result of the new layout is that products which are most often rented together are stored next to each other. This makes picking and packing rental equipment easier and more efficient, which ultimately means we can process more orders with higher quality of service.
An organized and efficient warehouse layout ensures that we can manage a very large stock of rental products while maintaining high levels of quality and efficiency. This means our customers can rest assured that if they need rental equipment, we can readily and accurately fulfill their needs.
