The need to reliably predict foundation settlements has led to the use of plate-loading tests as a method of in situ determination of soil-deformation properties. The results of bearing-plate tests, especially when presented in graphical form, serve as a way to estimate allowable pressures and deformation moduli calculations. The magnitudes of plate settlements and the configurations of plate load-settlement curves determine decisions as to the acceptance of certain types and dimensions of foundations. This paper describes settlements of plates/experimental footings on soils in which deformation properties improve with increasing depth. A simple interpretation formula is offered to calculate allowable pressures. The application of this formula is demonstrated in plate-load test results published in the literature. Erratum to this paper appears in 18(3).

The Donzi Lane Landfill in Atlanta, GA had been in use since the 1970's for construction and demolition waste disposal. The site was nearing its...
In this study, the influence of vegetation type and environmental temperature on performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) was investigated. Results of vegetation types indicated that the removal of most nutrients in polyculture was greater than those in monoculture and unplanted control. The greatest removal percentages of NH4+-N, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in polyculture were 98.7%, 98.5%, and 92.6%, respectively. In experiments of different temperatures, the removal percentages of NH4+-N,...
To study whether broiler and layer farms contribute to the environmental Campylobacter load, environmental matrices at or close to farms, and caecal material from chickens, were examined. Similarity between Campylobacter from poultry and environment was tested based on species identification and Multilocus Sequence Typing. Campylobacter prevalence in caecal samples was 97% at layer farms (n = 5), and 93% at broiler farms with Campylobacter-positive flocks (n = 2/3). Campylobacter prevalence in environmental...
It has long been known that there is a strong relationship between soil water content and the health and yield of crops. But only in the past few decades has science quantified the specifics of these relationships. This research has expanded to develop a relationship between soil moisture levels and the impact on meteorological and hydrological models and forecasts.
Starting in the late 1970s, the meteorological community became interested in soil moisture after studies were published addressing thermal fluxes...
Field sensor quickly, accurately identifies soil issues
Producers sometimes face challenges that go deep into the soil. They need answers to help the soil, on site. A portable field sensor can accurately measure minerals in soils more easily and efficiently than existing methods. And a research team, including a middle school student and her scientist father, can confirm it.
Calcium, like other minerals, is necessary for healthy plant growth. However, an excess of calcium — particularly in the form of...
