Rolling out novel scrap tyre solutions

In 2003, a team of scientists secured a £160 000 (Euro 230 000/US$ 310 000) ‘proof of concept’ award from Scotland’s leading enterprise agency to develop a microbial solution to the problem of scrap tyres. The so-called DART technology involves the use of naturally-occurring desulphurising bacteria isolated at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, to devulcanise the rubber tyres by selectively removing the sulphur. The patented DART
bacteria are available as freeze-dried cultures.
