Project summary: The project concerns a research activity to acquire new knowledge and skills aimed at developing an innovative system based on the technology of active laser remote sensing (also known as Visual Ranging LIDAR) for the measurement of meteorological and atmospheric parameters initially applied to aviation. The innovative system (3D SAFE-TRANS LIDAR) will provide critical information on the state of the atmosphere in the surrounding area of the airport and will provide measurements and data in three dimensions of the cloud base, Slant Visual Range (SVR), Vertical Optical Range (VOR), Runway Visibility (RVR), as well as an early warning system for incoming phenomena such as fog. One of the main advantages of the system is its remote detection capability as opposed to existing conventional sensors that perform static (in situ) measurements. Recently, LIDAR-based systems for visibility measurement have also been accepted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which has set up an international ISO standard for these systems (ISO 28902-1: 2012). The proposed system will offer maximum safety to flights and will make a significant contribution to optimal air traffic management.
