The Cypriot registered chemical tanker the Multitank Ascania, carrying a cargo of highly flammable and potentially explosive vinyl acetate monomer, liad an engine room fire off the north coast of Scotland. The vessel drifted without power, through the Pentland Firth one of the UK’s most dangerous stretches of water before drifting to a sheltered anchorage at Dunnet Head.

The National Chemical Emergency Centre was requested to provide advice on the chemical properties of the cargo and the implications for public safety and the environment if there was a chemical release to the atmosphere or sea.
