Septic Tank Systems Provide Efficient Sewage Disposal
If you just moved into the rural areas in and around Brazoria, Fort Bend, Matagorda, and Wharton, you might not yet be familiar with septic systems. When working properly, a septic system is a highly effective, chemical-free way to treat wastewater from a home or business using natural methods.
A septic system does require some maintenance, although it is very limited when done correctly. By understanding how the system works, and what you need to do to maintain it, it is easy for a homeowner to reduce the risk of needing emergency septic pumping services. At the same time, Aqua-Zyme can work with you to provide scheduled septic pumping, a key part of the preventive care for the system.
How a Septic Tank System Works
Wastewater produced in the home goes out a main drain pipe into a large underground holding tank. This septic tank is typically made of concrete or fiberglass, is watertight to insure that it does not allow seepage out of the tank. There is an outlet from the tank that goes into a drain field, which can be a single perforated pipe or a fork-like configuration of pipes. The entire drain field is also under the surface of the ground.
As wastewater from the home comes into the tank, the solid materials drop to the bottom of the tank and are consumed by bacteria. The effluent water flows out to the drain field where it enters the soil. Microbes and bacteria in the soil consume any organic particles in this water and act as a natural filter and cleaning system.
Eventually, the sludge or the residual solid material at the bottom of the tank builds up, reducing the efficiency of the system. If left to build up for too long, this leads to slow drains or even sewage backing up into the home. With routine septic pumping services, which are typically performed every two to four years, the system can operate efficiently without any special care.
