The Seropédica landfill is located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Since the closure of the 130-hectare big Gramacho landfill, Seropédica now receives over 6,000 tons of waste per day. Seropédica is the most modern solid waste treatment center in Brazil and Hofstetter has been awarded the biogas treatment process, as well as the set up of a flaring system at the landfill. The initial stage involves treatment of the biogas as well as the setup of a flaring system, and in the future there will be electricity production and biogas upgrading. The engineering team and the project manager managed the production of the 5,000 m3/h CDM plant in an amazing 8 weeks! After transportation and customs, the plant was constructed and within a week it was up and running. The modular plant produces carbon credits and is ready to be expended to convert the biogas in subsequent phases to electricity and biomethane.
