Proposition 65 (Prop 65) is the ‘Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986’, a ballot initiative passed overwhelmingly by California residents in 1986. Since its enactment, there have been numerous lawsuits which resulted in the reduction of carcinogenic and reproductive chemicals through reformulations of consumer products containing such chemicals (1).

In a recent Safeguards, SGS informed you that a number of Prop 65 settlements have been reached for a variety of products, including bags, battery testers, binders, binoculars,  carrying cases, casserole dishes, checkbooks, eyewear, Halloween costume accessories, folding beds / mats, jar lifters, jar wrenches, measuring wheels, pet accessories, sunglasses, rollators and zipper bags (1).

In recent months, a number of Prop 65 settlements have been concluded for a variety of consumer products, including bags, bag clips, baskets, billiard table covers, can openers, clocks, crimping tools, ear plugs, exercise balls, floor mats, gripper pads, kitchen tools, passport covers,  pet accessories, plastic figures, stationery sets, tools, wheelbarrows and carts, vinyl / PVC cables and watches.

Highlights of these reformulations for lead and / or phthalates are summarized in Table 1. The acronyms and names of phthalates are summarized in Table 2 within the latest SafeGuards bulletin (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/000006/sgs-safeguards-15213-california-prop-65-recent-settlements-a4-en-13.pdf).
