CL Voelcker was appointed by P.R.Singleton Limited to assist with the variation of permit conditions for their on-shore oil well site in West Sussex.

The site is an existing oil well site for which additional capacity is required. The initial stage of the process involved detailed liaison with the Environment Agency regarding the potential hydrogeological impacts of the proposals. We were required to provide technical support to demonstrate that the proposed drilling techniques and fluids were appropriate for use within the hydrogeological sequence encountered by the deep oil wells. Compliance with the Groundwater Regulations 1998 was demonstrated after examination of the characteristics of each water-bearing unit.

Following approval of the drilling methods an application for a permit variation was prepared. The variation application was made in accordance with the newly implemented Environmental Permitting regime.

Supporting documentation included a revised Site Condition Report, to meet Environmental Permitting requirements and a revised air dispersion (ADMS) screen assessment, to take into account the additional combustion plant required on site.

Some liaison was subsequently required on the use and design of the site's wastewater treatment plant to ensure residual discharge of treated effluent to the underlying chalk aquifer met appropriate standards.

The variation application was granted in spring 2009.
