Slum sanitation program

Greater Mumbai hosts a population of more than 16million. Prior to the Slum Sanitation Program (SSP), sanitation improvement schemes for the slum dwellers were implemented by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) through a supply-driven approach. Subsequently, 80% of publicly constructed toilet blocks were found not to be functioning and thus incapable of meeting the demand. These facilities were also putting pressure on public finances since the MCGM was responsible for all maintenance costs. Taking this into consideration, it was deemed necessary to develop an appropriate strategy for meeting the needs of slum dwellers on a more sustainable basis and a project study was commissioned to improved sanitation facilities on a sustainable basis specifically meeting the needs of the urban poor.
