This paper describes the status of staged gasification (low temperature pyrolysis and high temperature gasification) combined with pyrometallurgical smelting converting waste materials into synthesis or fuel gas (for combined heat and power), metals/metal mixtures (for recycling) and construction material (synthetic basalt). This complete solution is named Product and Energy Plant (Dutch acronym: PEC ) and is offered by Gibros PEC. The PEC can be used for both large and small-scale decentralised applications for a wide variety of non recyclable wastes like automotive shredder residue (ASR), construction and demolition waste (C&D), electronic scrap, and sludge’s converting waste into energy and useful products. Different initiatives are ongoing in Western Europe. At ECN different research facilities are available, including a PDU, for design verification, feasibility studies and further process development.
Staged Thermal Treatment Combined With Pyrometallurgical Smelting Producing Energy and Products From Waste
Incineration of waste is considered as a state-of-the-art technology. However staged gasification in combination with pyrometallurgical smelting is ready for market introduction and offers principal advantages. These are higher efficiency (up to 35% electricity), efficient and cheaper fuel gas cleaning (less emissions), high quality secondary products (synthetic basalt), high input flexibility, and decentralised operation using local waste.
