Contamination Simulators by STS Ltd
Safe Training Systems Ltd (STS) are based
in the UK. STS manufacture and sell
instrumentation for the training of workers involved in
the handling and identification of radioactive material
through a range of realistic simulated instruments.
They sell “off-the-shelf” products but will also convert
instruments already held – perhaps those which are
surplus to requirements or damaged beyond economic
AURPO used two Mini-monitors with EP15 probes which
were converted by STS into Series 800 Ionising
Radiation Simulators (Fig 1). They work by “sniffing”
vapour released from “contaminated” surfaces. The
surfaces are sprayed with an STS simulant “LS1” and
a heavy vapour is released by evaporation over time.
Instead of a Geiger-Muller tube a gas sniffer detector
assembly is fitted in the probe and held in place by the
usual grille and a clip (Fig 2). This assembly draws air
from the surface onto the detector (which in this
example is simulating a Geiger-Muller tube).
