Sustainability best practice manual development – Case Study

The Brewers Association, a nonprofit membership organization with over 1,400 organization members and 50,000 individual members required assistance in developing and launching its first association-wide sustainability initiative: compiling three craft brewing industry sustainability manuals and accompanying online resources. These resources are designed to provide members with best practices, resources and tools. The manuals are focused on three key areas: Water/Wastewater, Energy/GHG, and Solid Waste. Within these three areas, each manual focuses on ‘front-end’ usage and reduction best practice issues, and ‘back-end’ treatment and resource options.

Antea Group understood that, given the diversity of the craft brewing industry, the sustainability concepts conveyed in these manuals needed to be designed to fit the needs of all craft brewers - ranging from small brewpubs to large packaging brewers and everyone in between. These manuals were also designed with an emphasis on practicality and usability, featuring case studies, tools and resources directly from the craft brewing community.

In order to capture the needs of the members and craft a set of manuals that provide tools so that members did not have to ‘re-invent the wheel’, our team conducted extensive feedback solicitation and sample member best practices through online surveys, in-person conference sessions and individual interviews with members throughout North America. Based upon this information gleaned, the team collected an extensive library of source material from the craft brewing sector and is drew upon that information, along with industry experience to craft extensive strategic and resource-packed manuals within the three manual subjects, focusing on in-house processes, waste streams, energy efficiency opportunities, building enhancement suggestions, efficient resource management and supply chain engagement among other issues.

The resulting manual and accompanying web tools provided our client leadership and their membership with a set of best practice manuals rich in industry knowledge and sector specific examples and resources already in use at individual member facilities. Thus, individual member organizations throughout North America benefit on a broad scale with numerous energy saving measures, responsible resource management, waste stream reduction strategies, and facility upgrade ideas.
