0
A&WMA’s international specialty conference Sustainable Development and the Importance of Chemicals Management in the 21st Century, which was held December 7–9, 2004, in Ottawa, Ontario, focused on both the positive and negative aspects of managing chemicals from the points of view of human health, the environment, and industry. This issue of EM includes three of the papers presented at the conference and the complete keynote presentation, along with other information to augment the conference proceedings published on CDROM (see sidebar opposite).

The keynote speaker for this specialty conference was Dr. John Buccini, who at the time was director of the Chemicals Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme, Geneva, Switzerland. Setting the stage for the rest of the conference, his presentation (see “Sustainable Development and the Importance of the Sound Management of Chemicals in the 21st Century,” starting on page 6) gave a review of the present global chemicals systems and indicated the direction in which they were evolving. The remainder of the conference program was divided into four half-day sessions, all of which included time for an interactive discussion among speakers and attendees.
