TAIM WESER, a leading company world-wide in the installation of solid bulk conveyor systems, has finished installing a new grain handling conveyor system at Huelva Port for the company Terminal Marítima de Huelva S.L (TMH). This company specialises in activities related to general maritime transport (storage, transport and handling and transfer of goods, loading and unloading, stowage and unstowage, etc.) Following several extensions, TMH’s storage facilities at Huelva Port have the capacity to store 160,000 tons of all kinds of grain. With this new product, entrusted to TAIM WESER, TMH has equipped the port facilities with modern facilities, increasing Huelva Port’s competitiveness in technological terms. This is one of the main bulk ports in South Europe and a strategic commercial spot.
After a six-month assembly period and having completed the no load test phase, the new grain conveyor system is now operational. The circuit includes a moving hopper, 7 conveyor belts, two of them fitted with a tripper, and 5 transfer towers.
From the ship’s holds to the warehouses
The circuit starts by supplying a hopper with raw material unloaded at Huelva Port from the ship’s holds. It is a motorised and mobile 250 m3-capacity hopper running on a rail track, designed to feed the conveyor system with a maximum capacity of 1,500 t/h, and that moves at a speed of 0.2 m/s. The hopper includes a reversible extraction conveyor belt at the outlet, which tips the product onto the conveyor belt using fixed loading points at the right angle to avoid dust emission. The loading process can be carried out at ten loading shovels designed for this purpose, with a 20 m distance between them. This arrangement has been used at other maritime terminals that TAIM WESER has supplied.
The conveyor system is formed by 7 conveyor belts which transport the grain via transfer towers to the warehouse. The belts are 1,600 mm wide. To transport grain, the belt conveyor system and weighing apparatus have been designed with a 2,000 t/h capacity, with 0.75 t/m3 product density, while to transport soya flour it has a 2,000 t/h capacity, 3.0 m/s belt speed and 0.6 t/m3 density. The system is completed with two tripper conveyor belts to deposit the material in two 300 m-long warehouses divided into 5 sections, to sort the material in accordance with the client’s preferences and needs.
Solutions adapted to the port environment
In one section of the circuit, in order to leave a free space without height restrictions for vehicle traffic, TAIM WESER designed a retractable telescopic system through which the conveyor belt section in question is inserted into the previous section of the circuit, leaving a 21 m-wide passage allowing vehicles to pass through without worrying about maximum height restrictions. Finally, also in accordance with the client’s requirements, one of the transfer towers include a high-precision weighing tower to control the weight of the transported product.
