TRS Group, Inc. (TRS) worked as a subcontractor to Kennedy Jenks Consultants (KJ) to remediate trichloroethene
(TCE) in soil during the winter months in Eastern Montana. The project was performed for a firm fixed price based on the TRS standard contract that included installing and operating the ERH system until either the remedial goal was achieved or the design energy was applied, whichever occurred first. The remedial goal was to reduce TCE concentrations in soil to 0.1 mg/kg for a reduction of approximately 99%. The goal was achieved with an average reduction of 99.5% of TCE in soil, with 13 of the 14 samples measuring nondetect. This Brownfield project involved the cleanup of a TCE source area located beneath an abandoned steel manufacturing building. From soil sampling performed before ERH, it was calculated that 50,000 lbs of TCE were present in the source area. Following the successful ERH remediation, the site owner was able to quickly redevelop the property.
