A stunning new footbridge is set to transform Stockton-on-Teesriverside, inspiring the community and creating a raft of new jobs.
Infinity Bridge, so-called because together with its reflection it forms the shape of the mathematical symbol for infinity, has been funded by Tees Valley Regeneration and its partners English Partnerships, One NorthEast and Stockton Borough Council as a way of attracting developers to Stockton-on-Tees’ North Shore.
WYG has played a central role in the project from the outset. The unique bridge design, with its pair of continuous, asymmetric structural steel arches, was produced in response to a brief we developed for an international design competition. We worked on ground investigation, land ownership issues and the planning process, assisting with the tender process for the bridge and are now supervising the construction on behalf of the client group.
As Joe Docherty, chief executive of Tees Valley Regeneration said: ‘This bridge … would be challenging to construct anywhere in the world – that we have the companies technically advanced enough to construct it here makes it amazing.’
