The Anatomy of an LED Light Bulb

Let us explore the anatomy of an LED light bulb:

LED light bulbs are made of several parts but basically it is made up of an LED chip, gold wire, lead wire and plastic package.

The LED chip is found in the center of the bulb and is considered as the most important part of the bulb. It is the one responsible for producing the light. One LED light bulb contains 4 LED chips. To allow electricity to flow into the LED chip from the frame, a gold wire is needed. The gold wire connects the chips’ metal pin to the lead frame. The lead frame is used to ensure that the LED chip is in place and protects all the sensitive parts of the LED light bulb. The plastic package is the strongest part of the LED light bulb. It protects all the components of the light bulb to ensure that it lasts for a long time.

How is light produced in a LED light bulb?

A silicon carbide seed is mounted in a crucible filled with silicon carbide. When heat is applied on the crucible, the silicon carbide transforms into vapour form and deposits on the seed. This creates a large crystal known as an Ingot. The Ingot is then sliced into very thin wafers. The sliced Ingot wafers will act as the foundational substrates on where the LED light bulb will be built.

Then, the wafers are polished into a smooth and shine surface to prepare for LED fabrication. Indium, Gallium and Nitrogen are deposited on the wafer. This will serve as the active layer of the LED. The wafer is subsequently diced into as many as 100,000 LED chips. When voltage is applied to the LED chip, electrons and holes form and recombine in the active layer to produce light.

Because the light produced by the combination of Indium, Gallium and Nitrogen are usually blue or green, the led chip is mounted in a package where phosphor can be added. The phosphor successfully converts the light to yellow and red and finally, to a beautifully bright white light.

The package of the LED light bulb is topped with a lens to help shape and direct the light for its specific use.

Now that you know the parts of the LED light bulb and how it works, you should be able to understand why it is definitely better and why it costs a lot compared to the standard incandescent light bulb. All the parts are sophisticated and very effective in producing bright light without using too much energy.
